Guide · from Bluebeam

From a Bluebeam PDF to a count across every sheet

Most estimators who ask for access already live in Bluebeam. Nothing changes there: the set comes out as a PDF, and the count happens across every sheet of it at once instead of page by page by hand.

Get the set out as one PDF

Save or export the set from Bluebeam Revu as a single PDF with every sheet you want counted. One file per set keeps the by-page view and the export in the same order as the drawings. A set split into one file per sheet still works; it is simply more files to open.

Markups: flatten or strip, but teach from the drawing

Bluebeam markups (clouds, highlights, your own count stamps) can be flattened into the page or left as annotations. Either is fine, with one rule: teach the legend from the drawing's own symbol, never from a markup. A highlighter stroke over a receptacle is not the receptacle, and a count stamp from a previous hand count is exactly the thing you do not want counted. If a set carries old count stamps, strip them before export so the sheet is clean.

One legend, every sheet

Open the PDF; each page becomes a Sheet. Teach the symbol once, by picking it from the legend or boxing one instance on a sheet, and run the count. The engine sweeps every sheet for it. The By Page tab shows where the instances are, sheet by sheet, which is the answer to the question people type into search: how to count one thing (bollards, ADA signs, data drops) across many sheets without going page by page.

Scans and mixed sets

Scanned pages are supported alongside vector sheets in the same set. A scan's symbol is taught the same way; a clean legend matters more than whether the page is vector.

The export stays tied to the drawing

Exports carry a derived set identifier and a cryptographic fingerprint of the source PDF. Re-export against a revised set and the export is refused rather than rendered against the wrong revision, which is the dispute a detached count invites. Excel, CSV and PDF are the formats; the takeoff PDF lists each legend with its reviewed count, floors marked as floors on drafts and absent from finals.

Not a replacement for Bluebeam

Bluebeam stays the markup and document tool it is; SimplyCount does the counting and the review. The comparison page covers that side; this guide is only the hand-off. Bluebeam and Revu are trademarks of their owner; SimplyCount is not affiliated with or endorsed by them.

Questions

Common questions

Do I need to flatten the PDF before counting?
No. Flattened or not, the legend is taught from the drawing's symbol. Strip old count stamps so they are not mistaken for symbols.
Can I count one symbol across fifty sheets in one run?
Yes. One legend is counted across every sheet in the set; the By Page tab shows the per-sheet split, and a dense sheet can be scoped with a draw area.
